HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
requesting the department of education and the hawaii high school athletic association to examine the feasibility of establishing brazilian jiu-jitsu as a sanctioned sport.
WHEREAS, Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a popular and exciting sport; and
WHEREAS, Brazilian jiu-jitsu teaches children and teenagers about hard work, dedication, and focus, all valuable skills that can be used throughout life; and
WHEREAS, the overarching philosophy of Brazilian jiu-jitsu upholds the values of loyalty, integrity, humility, compassion, self-awareness, hard work, and physical fitness; and
WHEREAS, Brazilian jiu-jitsu training promotes camaraderie and unity through positive, competitive interaction; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's students could benefit from having Brazilian jiu-jitsu as a sanctioned sport within the public high school system; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Education, in conjunction with the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, is requested to examine the feasibility of establishing Brazilian jiu-jitsu as a sanctioned sport; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Education is requested to submit a report of its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2016; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent of Education and the Executive Director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.
