HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING WHOLESALERS AND RETAILERS IN HAWAII TO VOLUNTARILY REFRAIN FROM selling, purchasing, and distributing PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN BISPHENoL-a.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Bisphenol-A, commonly abbreviated as BPA, is a synthetic compound used primarily in the manufacture of plastic items, including some baby bottles and sippy cups, infant formula cans and jars, food and drink containers, and reusable water bottles; and

 

     WHEREAS, according to many experts, Bisphenol-A is linked to a wide range of health problems, including adverse effects on fetal and infant behavior and brain development, obesity and associated diseases, thyroid function, and breast cancer; and

 

     WHEREAS, the adverse health effects are even more pronounced in babies, toddlers, and children; and

 

     WHEREAS, several jurisdictions have banned Bisphenol-A from certain children's food and beverage containers, including Chicago, Minnesota, Connecticut, and Canada; and

 

     WHEREAS, the current market provides similar plastic products manufactured without Bisphenol-A; and

 

     WHEREAS, the residents of Hawaii, and especially keiki, should not be subject to unnecessary health risks; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, that wholesalers and retailers that operate in the State are requested to voluntarily refrain from selling, purchasing, and distributing products that contain Bisphenol-A; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Commerce and Consumer Affairs to be disseminated to wholesalers and retailers that distribute products that contain Bisphenol-A.
