HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING DR. ROGER AMES AND DR. GEOFFREY BANNISTER FOR THEIR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STATE OF HAWAII AND ABROAD.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Dr. Roger Ames is an internationally distinguished philosopher, well known both in China and the West for his leadership in research, writing and teaching of Chinese philosophy; and

 

     WHEREAS, in light of Dr. Ames’ outstanding scholastic achievements as one of the world’s leading scholars in Chinese Thought, he was awarded the prestigious Huilin Culture award, which is awarded by the Chinese government in recognition of Chinese and international scholars for their outstanding and positive effect on Chinese culture within China and abroad; and

 

     WHEREAS, Dr. Ames was also awarded the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching and the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Research, which is rarely given to humanities professors; and

 

     WHEREAS, Ames was the Director of the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa for ten years, and has been the Editor of Philosophy East and West since 1987; and

 

     WHEREAS, Dr. Ames founded China Review International, and has been its editor for over a decade; and

 

     WHEREAS, many of Dr. Ames’ published works have already become classics and standards in the study of Chinese philosophy around the world; and

 

     WHEREAS, Dr. Ames is considered one of the world’s leading scholars in the fields of comparative philosophy and Chinese philosophy, including Daoism and Confucianism; and

 

     WHEREAS, Dr. Ames’ prominent international reputation has drawn students from around the world to study philosophy at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa; and

 

     WHEREAS, Dr. Ames has played a vital role in building the UH Philosophy department into the world’s best program in comparative east-west philosophy; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Ames has inspired and influenced generations of students and scholars who are now the up and coming leaders in their fields in comparative philosophy here in Hawaii, on the mainland, and internationally; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Geoffrey Bannister has been president of Hawaii Pacific University since 2011; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Bannister previously served as the 17th President of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, and as the Dean of Arts and Sciences at Boston University; and

 

WHEREAS, under Dr. Bannister’s leadership, Hawaii Pacific University expanded graduate research programs and built dozens of partnerships with universities around the world; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Bannister has long been a proponent of advancing international education, serving as the Founding President of the Forum on Education Abroad as well as President of both the Study Abroad Foundation and of Cultural Experiences Abroad, organizations that provide high-quality study abroad opportunities and set the national standards on study abroad programs; and

 

WHEREAS, The Oceanic Institute, of which Dr. Bannister serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, merged with HPU under his leadership; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Bannister has been an active member of the Hawaii Business Roundtable, where he helped in take the lead in the Keep Hawaii’s Heroes initiative; and

 

WHEREAS, Under Dr. Bannister’s leadership, HPU invested over $40 million in the revitalization of Aloha Tower Marketplace, creating a mixed use space that increases access to international education as well as contributes to a lively and reinvigorated Downtown; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, that Dr. Roger Ames and Dr. Geoffrey Bannister are recognized and commended for their outstanding contributions to higher education in Hawaii and abroad.
