HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

HONORING THE HAWAII STATE HONOREES AND DISTINGUISHED FINALISTS FOR THE 2014 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, presented by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities; and

 

     WHEREAS, Prudential Financial has been a financial service leader committed to helping individual and institutional customers grow and protect their wealth through a variety of products and services, including life insurance, annuities, retirement-related services, mutual funds, and investment management; and

 

     WHEREAS, the National Association of Secondary School Principals is the leading organization of and national voice for middle level and high school principals, assistant principals, and all school leaders from across the United States and aims to connect and engage school leaders through advocacy, research, and education with the intent to ensure the success of each student and strong school leadership practices through the design and delivery of high quality professional learning experiences; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards represents the United States' largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service; and

 

     WHEREAS, since the program's inception in 1995, more than one hundred thousand young volunteers have been honored at the local, state, and national level; and

 

     WHEREAS, the program chooses one honoree from the middle school and high school levels from each state and the District of Columbia for their hard work and dedication to volunteering; and

 

     WHEREAS, all public and private middle schools and high schools in the country, as well as all Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, Young Men's Christian Associations, and HandsOn Network affiliates, were eligible to select a student or member for a local Prudential Spirit of Community Award; and

 

     WHEREAS, the local honorees are then reviewed by an independent judging panel, which selects State Honorees and Distinguished Finalists based on criteria including personal initiative, effort, impact, and personal growth; and

 

     WHEREAS, in May 2014, ten of the State Honorees – five at the middle school level and five at the high school level – will be named America's top youth volunteers of 2014 at our nation's capital in Washington, D.C.; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, that this body hereby congratulates and honors Kayla Kawamura, of Hanalani Schools, and Hannah Button, of Trinity Lutheran School, on their recognition as the Hawaii State Honorees for the 2014 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for their altruistic actions, showcase of their peer leadership, and their exemplary community spirit, and extends to them best wishes as they continue onto the national competition; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body also congratulates and honors Gary Calzada, of Governor Wallace Rider Farrington High School, and Kimberly Uehisa, of Island Pacific Academy, on their recognition as the Hawaii Distinguished Finalists for the 2014 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for their impressive community service activities and for demonstrating characteristics of community pride; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to Kayla Kawamura, Hannah Button, Gary Calzada, Kimberly Uehisa, the Headmaster of Hanalani Schools, the Principal of Trinity Lutheran School, the Principal of Governor Wallace Rider Farrington High School, the Headmaster of Island Pacific Academy, the Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of Prudential Financial, Inc., and the President of the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
