HOUSE RESOLUTION
recognizing the brave men and women who served our country during the vietnam war and remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
WHEREAS, March 29, 2018 is the first annual National Vietnam Veterans Day, to honor veterans who served in all branches during the Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS, the Vietnam War was fought in the Republic of Vietnam from 1955 to 1975 and involved regular forces from the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and Viet Cong guerrilla forces in armed conflict with the United States Armed Forces, the armed forces of allies of the United States, and the armed forces of the Republic of Vietnam; and
WHEREAS, more than 58,000 members of the United States Armed Forces lost their lives in the Vietnam War, and more than 300,000 members were wounded; and
WHEREAS, combat in Vietnam was brutal and battles in Hue and the A Shau Valley resulted in heroism that often went unrecognized in a nation bitterly divided by the war; the controversy and divisiveness of the war forced a generation of veterans to wait too long for the country to acknowledge and honor the efforts and services of those veterans; and
WHEREAS, this body honors the sacrifice and patriotism of those who answered the nation's call and deployed thousands of miles from home to protect the interests of the United States, and to provide the Vietnamese people the opportunity to fight for the values of freedom and self-governance; and
WHEREAS, this body gives thanks to those who continued to serve their country once they left military service by building new careers and becoming the teachers, clergy, business owners, employees, pilots, civil servants, and other vital roles of a prosperous society; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2018, that this body hereby honors and recognizes the brave men and women who served our country during the Vietnam War and remembers those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
