HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.R. NO.

63

THIRTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2021

H.D. 1

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

DECLARING THE YEAR 2022 AS THE YEAR OF THE LIMU.

WHEREAS, limu is a crucial part of a healthy and productive reef ecosystem; and

WHEREAS, limu is the primary producer and, therefore, the base of the nearshore marine food chain; and

WHEREAS, limu is a key indicator of the health and resilience of an ahupua‘a; and

WHEREAS, limu was once the third important component, along with fish and poi, of the traditional Native Hawaiian diet; and

WHEREAS, in the past, limu was used not only for food but also for medicinal purposes as well as for religious and cultural ceremonies; and

WHEREAS, much limu-based cultural knowledge has been lost over many generations due to a lack of knowledge and awareness of limu's significance; and

WHEREAS, there has been a steep decline of limu throughout the State and a correlating decline in the amount of nearshore fish; and

WHEREAS, the lack of knowledge and awareness about limu hinders any work or effort to increase Hawaii's population of nearshore fish; and

WHEREAS, recapturing, retaining, and sharing cultural and environmental knowledge about limu will benefit nearshore fisheries and all the people of Hawaii for many generations; and

WHEREAS, the academic and community efforts to revitalize limu by kupuna such as Dr. Isabella Aiona Abbot and Henry Chang Wo have perpetuated the deeper socio-cultural ties that bind limu to the islands; and

WHEREAS, community organizations such as the Limu Hui from Kua‘āina Ulu ‘Auamo and the Waimanalo Limu Hui have worked to propagate limu species; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2021, that the year 2022 be declared the Year of the Limu; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, and Board of Directors and Limu Hui Coordinator for Kua‘āina Ulu ‘Auamo.
