HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

commending jim lally and project waialeale's community college scholarship program.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, James "Jim" P. Lally began his career as an engineer at TRW, and later joined Hewlett-Packard and was responsible for the management of HP's Minicomputer Product Line; and

 

     WHEREAS, Jim Lally joined Intel and founded three major microcomputer systems divisions, served as General Manager, and was responsible for profit and loss for each division; and

 

     WHEREAS, Jim Lally served as a General Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and served on the boards of Proteon, Sequent Computer Systems, Symantec, Walker Interactive Products, Wyse Technology, Ascend Communications, NeoMagic, NDC, Vivid Semiconductor, Wireless Access and Visioneer; and

 

     WHEREAS, Jim Lally retired from technology and now resides on Hawaii Island, serves on the Boards of the Kukio Community Foundation and the Hawaii Opera Theatre; and

 

     WHEREAS, Jim Lally is involved with education at Kohala High School and the University of Hawaii, is a Trustee at the University of Hawaii Foundation, and is helping build the Hawaii Community College campus at Palamanui; and

 

WHEREAS, Jim Lally founded The Waialeale Project, a special scholarship program at Kauai Community College that provides Kauai low income or disadvantaged residents with an opportunity to attend college for free; and

 

     WHEREAS, The Waialeale Project alone supports almost 10 percent of students attending Kauai Community College at present, and Jim plans to expand the program to all University of Hawaii community college campuses in the future; and

 

     WHEREAS, The Waialeale Project pays up to $5,000 in tuition and fees per year "to Kauai residents who would not otherwise have considered taking classes at the college level or who would not have been able to take classes at the college level;" and

 

     WHEREAS, since its inception, over 230 students have received Waialeale Project scholarships at Kauai Community College; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, that this body honors and commends James "Jim" P. Lally for his creative and innovative commitment to educational advancement in the State of Hawaii; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body honors and commends The Waialeale Project for providing an opportunity for nontraditional students to attend college; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body offers James "Jim" P. Lally its best wishes and warmest aloha in all of his future endeavors; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body encourages and supports Jim's planned expansion of The Waialeale Project to provide an opportunity for nontraditional students to attend college statewide; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the President of the University of Hawaii and the Chancellors of the University of Hawaii's community colleges.
