HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A STATEWIDE MANGO TREE-PLANTING movement CALLED "MANGO MANIA".

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, tropical fruit trees such as mangoes thrive in the climate of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, over 60 different varieties of mango grow on the islands, trees begin to bear fruit in May, with peak season being in July, and some varieties bear fruit until October; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii grown mangoes are a part of our tropical agricultural cornucopia and sold locally as well as exported internationally; and

 

     WHEREAS, fruit trees contribute to Hawaii's lush tropical beauty that should be promoted, preserved, and perpetuated, and

the reputation of Hawaii as a tropical paradise is vital to the State's tourism industry and in turn the State's economy; and

 

     WHEREAS, tree roots stabilize the soil, prevent soil erosion, support the capture and conservation of our water supply, help remediate pollutants, and supply oxygen by absorbing carbon dioxide; and

 

     WHEREAS, trees lower air temperatures by evaporating water from their leaves, and contribute to watersheds; and

 

     WHEREAS, planting trees is a means to scale up action on biodiversity and sustainable development goals to create a stronger culture of conservation by addressing the challenge of sustaining a food supply and conserving nature; and

 

     WHEREAS, "Mango Mania" will aid in the Sustainable Hawaii Initiative's goal of doubling local food production by 2020; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, that the state Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with the Department of Land and Natural Resources, community organizations and each of the State's counties, are urged to establish a statewide "Mango Mania" tree-planting tree movement; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the Chairperson of the Board of Agriculture, the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, the Mayors of each of the State's counties, the Chairpersons of each of the county councils, and all forms of radio, television, and newspaper media that serve the State of Hawaii.
