HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

Urging the hawaii congressional delegation to take the necessary actions supporting the reorganization of important military assets and property for increased efficiency and effectiveness.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the United States Military has, and continues to play an important role in protecting American lives, allies, and territory from threats around the world; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii serves an important role in both U.S. foreign policy as well as for strategic U.S. military installations; and

 

     WHEREAS, an ideal relationship between the U.S. military and the people of Hawaii is built upon trust and mutual respect; and

 

     WHEREAS, in order to both better serve the people of Hawaii as well create more effective military operations, a reorganization of resources is recommended; and

 

     WHEREAS, part of this reorganization includes transferring resources currently in other states to Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, this reorganization also includes transferring currently federal land to the State of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, this reorganization is intended to benefit multiple branches of the U.S. military, the State of Hawaii, and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands; and

 

     WHEREAS, the most effective way to bring about this reorganization is through Congressional action; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaii Congressional Delegation is uniquely qualified as members of Congress to raise issues and support positions that would benefit Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaii Congressional Delegation has an obligation to serve the people of Hawaii; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2022, that the Legislature urges the Hawaii Congressional Delegation to relocate all assets of the U.S. Coast Guard from its current location at Sand Island to Pearl Harbor, allowing for the effective closure of the U.S. Coast Guard housing area at Wailupe; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the land on which the U.S. Coast Guard housing area was located at Wailupe be transferred to the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to be converted to Hawaiian Home Lands; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the U.S. Navy's Pacific-based hospital ship, the U.S.N.S Mercy, be transferred from its current home port of San Diego to Pearl Harbor; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the United States Army Pacific Headquarters be relocated from its current location at Fort Shafter to Schofield Barracks; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the land currently known as Fort Shafter and Shafter Flats be transferred to the State of Hawaii to be repurposed as the State sees fit; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the members of the Hawaii State House of Representatives, the members of Hawaii's Congressional Delegation, the United States Army Pacific Commanding General, the United States Navy Pacific Fleet Commander, the United States Coast Guard District Fourteen Commander, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, and the Department of Land And Natural Resources.
