A BILL FOR AN ACT
Relating to queen lili‘uokalani day.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that currently the State of Hawai‘i recognizes two state holidays honoring ali‘i (royals), King Kamehameha Day, June 11, and Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day, March 26. Both of these holidays were declared prior to Hawai‘i becoming the fiftieth state. Since statehood there has not been a holiday dedicated to honoring Hawai‘i's ali‘i.
November 11, 2017, marked the centennial observance of the passing of Hawai‘i's last ruling monarch, Queen Lili‘uokalani. Events across the state were held to honor the Queen, which included an event located at the capitol at the queen's promenade. At this event, the governor proclaimed the year 2018 as "The Year of Remembrance of Queen Lili‘uokalani".
The purpose of this bill is to establish Queen Lili‘uokalani Day on the first Monday in September, rather than September 2, in order to coincide with Labor Day.
SECTION 2. Section 8-5.5, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended to read as follows:
"[[]§8-5.5[]] Queen Lili‘uokalani
Day. [September 2] The first Monday
in September of each year shall be known and recognized as "Queen Lili‘uokalani Day" in memory of the birth of Queen Lili‘uokalani on September 2, 1838[; provided that this day
shall not be a state holiday.], and shall coincide with Labor Day."
SECTION 3. Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed and stricken. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2018.
