A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to bullying.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to part II, subpart C, to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§302A-     Bullying prohibition; disciplinary action.  (a)  The department shall establish policies to prohibit bullying at public schools.  The policies shall include the establishment of anti-bullying education classes and the mandatory attendance and successful completion of the classes by the offending student and at least one parent or guardian.

     (b)  In addition to any other disciplinary action, any student found to have engaged in bullying shall be suspended until the student and a parent or guardian of that student successfully completes an anti-bullying education class conducted or approved by the department.  The cost of attending the anti-bullying education class shall be borne by the student's parent or guardian."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2018.
