SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

REQUESTING THE EXECUTIVE OFFICE ON EARLY LEARNING TO COLLABORATE WITH THE EXECUTIVE OFFICE On AGING TO ENCOURAGE CARE PROVIDERS OF KEIKI AND KUPUNA TO CREATE INTERGENERATIONAL SHARED SITES FOR THE BETTERMENT OF HAWAII'S COMMUNITIES.

WHEREAS, keiki and kupuna are some of Hawaii's greatest treasures; and

WHEREAS, Hawaii has a historic and cultural tradition of valuing family and multigenerational living; and

WHEREAS, families are finding it increasingly more difficult to provide for the care of their young children and aging parents; and

WHEREAS, many kupuna experience social isolation, which can lead to loneliness and depression as well as mental and physical decline, while, at the same time, many keiki miss out on the wisdom and patience of kupuna as families are more often forced to live apart; and

WHEREAS, kupuna are currently undervalued in their capacity to contribute to the community; and

WHEREAS, intergenerational shared sites are settings where children, youth, and older adults participate in services and programs concurrently at the same site or on the same campus; and

WHEREAS, certain distinguished shared care sites in Honolulu, Kapolei, and Kahului have had success in implementing intergenerational programs; and

WHEREAS, participants in these intergenerational programs interact during regular planned intergenerational activities, as well as through informal encounters; and

WHEREAS, keiki and kupuna can learn values such as the richness of lives lived, the bounds of friendship, an appreciation of diversity, and insights into the different stages of life from spending time together in intergenerational shared sites; and

WHEREAS, working adults can also take advantage of the efficiency and effectiveness of having shared care sites for families; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Executive Office on Early Learning is requested to collaborate with the Executive Office on Aging to encourage care providers of keiki and kupuna to create intergenerational shared sites for the betterment of Hawaii's communities; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of the Executive Office on Early Learning and the Director of the Executive Office on Aging.
