SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND TOURISM; THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I WEST OAHU ACADEMY FOR CREATIVE MEDIA; AND THE HAWAII FILM OFFICE TO SEND A LETTER TO SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT AND ACTRESS JENnIFER LAWRENCE ASKING FOR AN APOLOGY FOR AN INCIDENT IN WHICH SACRED ROCKS WERE DESECRATED DURING THE FILMING OF THE HUNGER GAMES.
WHEREAS, Native Hawaiian sites are considered highly sacred areas that should not be disturbed; and
WHEREAS, these sites include temples, shrines, rocks, petroglyphs, rock carvings, fishponds, and other ancient architectural remains; and
WHEREAS, during the filming of The Hunger Games, actress Jennifer Lawrence desecrated sacred rocks, later joking about the incident on national television; and
WHEREAS, persons who are not from Hawaii should respect the beliefs of the Native Hawaiian people; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism; the University of Hawai‘i West Oahu Academy for Creative Media; and Hawaii Film Office are requested to send a letter to Sony Pictures Entertainment and actress Jennifer Lawrence asking for an apology for Ms. Lawrence's desecration of sacred rocks while filming The Hunger Games; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Sony Pictures Entertainment is urged to educate its staff on respecting Native Hawaiian sites when filming in Hawaii; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism; Chancellor of the University of Hawai‘i West Oahu; State Film Commissioner; and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
