SENATE RESOLUTION
URGING THE CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU TO INSTALL raised crosswalks at certain intersections along kuhina street.
WHEREAS, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding is involved in nearly one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities in the United States; and
WHEREAS, in Hawaii, speeding is a contributing factor in nearly fifty percent of all traffic fatalities; and
WHEREAS, pedestrian safety should be a priority for the State and the counties; and
WHEREAS, raised pedestrian crosswalks and speed bumps, which are designed to slow down motor vehicle traffic, can be effective tools to prevent collisions with pedestrians; and
WHEREAS, installing raised crosswalks along Kuhina Street would help to reduce the number of speeding vehicles on the roadway and protect the residents of Ewa Beach; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2021, that the City and County of Honolulu is urged to install raised crosswalks along Kuhina Street at the following intersections:
(1) Kuhina Street and Ahona Street;
(2) Kuhina Street and Pailani Street; and
(3) Kuhina Street and Mailani Street; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that City and County of Honolulu officials are urged to seek input from the Ewa Neighborhood Board and local residents regarding appropriate locations for the traffic calming devices at each intersection; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Transportation, Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, Chair of the Honolulu City Council, Director of the Honolulu Department of Transportation Services, Director of the Honolulu Department of Design and Construction, and Chair of the Ewa Neighborhood Board.
