TWENTY-EIGHTH LEGISLATURE, 2015
STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the governor to order the Exclusive display of the flag of hawaii over state buildings on January 17 of each year.

 

 

     WHEREAS, in commemoration of the 100-year anniversary of the Hawaiian monarchy, on January 17, 1993, Hawaii Governor John Waihee, III, ordered that the United States flag not be flown over state buildings as an appropriate reminder of the United States' involvement in the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani; and

 

     WHEREAS, the act of exclusively displaying the flag of Hawaii was also seen as a display of respect by the State to the Hawaiian monarchy; and

 

     WHEREAS, on November 23, 1993, the President and Congress of the United States issued Public Law 103-150 "[t]o acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the January 17, 1883 overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii, and to offer an apology to Native Hawaiians on behalf of the United States for the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii"; and

 

     WHEREAS, the exclusive display of the flag of Hawaii on January 17 of each year would serve as an annual reminder of the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, that the Governor is requested to order that the flag of Hawaii be exclusively flown over state buildings on January 17 of each year; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Attorney General, Chief Justice, Mayors of each county, Chiefs of Police of each county, and Prosecuting Attorney of each county.
