SENATE RESOLUTION
URGING THE HONOLULU CITY COUNCIL TO APPLY FOR INCLUSION OF WHITMORE VILLAGE IN CENTRAL OAHU IN THE EXISTING ENTERPRISE ZONE NO. 2 (MILILANI TECH PARK AND PARTS OF WAHIAWA).
WHEREAS, in these difficult economic times of lower revenues for the State and closure of key businesses, government must seek ways to encourage and expedite economic growth and diversity; and
WHEREAS, the state enterprise zones program was established to stimulate business and industrial growth in areas viable for neighborhood revitalization by means of regulatory flexibility and tax incentives; and
WHEREAS, Whitmore Village is located in central Oahu and is home to nearly five thousand people; and
WHEREAS, it is vital to the State's future to encourage economic growth and diversity in rural areas, such as Whitmore Village; and
WHEREAS, if the State of Hawaii includes Whitmore Village in an enterprise zone, future legislation can be directed to steer economic development, including jobs, housing, emerging industries, and education, to the leeward side of Oahu; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, that the Honolulu City Council is urged to apply for inclusion of Whitmore Village in the current state enterprise zone 2 (Mililani Tech Park and parts of Wahiawa) in the City and County of Honolulu; and
