TWENTY-SIXTH LEGISLATURE, 2012
STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

DECLARing the first week of october as hawaii fishing and seafood week.

 

 

     WHEREAS, in Hawaii, the heart of the Pacific, the sea is a natural resource that has provided our people with food, recreation, transportation, and a source of spirituality; and

 

     WHEREAS, fishing in Hawaii is a tradition woven into our island communities and local cultures that has been passed down for generations; and

 

     WHEREAS, we have learned from, cared for, and sustained these resources through active participation, use, conservation, and management; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii's residents enjoy three times the national annual per capita average of seafood consumption; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii's fisheries produce fresh and healthy seafood for our local residents and visitors; and

 

     WHEREAS, supporting local seafood production on an island community is a priority to reduce our dependence upon imported goods and provides essential food security for our island state; and

 

     WHEREAS, activities such as the Hawaii Fishing and Seafood Festival, hosted by the Pacific Islands Fisheries Group, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, celebrate Hawaii's rich fishing tradition and fondness for seafood; and

 

     WHEREAS, the festival has been held yearly since 2006 at Pier 38 to promote awareness of marine conservation, ocean safety, and responsible fishing and highlights Hawaii's magnificent seafood industry; and

 

     WHEREAS, festival activities include fishing workshops, tours of fishing vessels, tours of the fish auction facility, live fishing demonstrations, gyotaku printing, seafood cooking, and games for the keiki; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2012, that this body declares the first week of October as Hawaii Fishing and Seafood Week; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the people of Hawaii are encouraged to recognize and participate in activities that celebrate the importance of fishing and seafood traditions in Hawaii during Hawaii Fishing and Seafood Week; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Mayors of the Counties of Hawaii, Honolulu, Kauai, and Maui, and Pacific Islands Fisheries Group.
