STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THAT THE STATE FIRE COUNCIL ESTABLISH AN EDUCATIONAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN ON PREVENTING CLOTHES DRYER FIRES IN HOMES AND WORK WITH COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO IMPLEMENT PREVENTATIVE MEASURES.

 

 

     WHEREAS, between 2010 through 2014, United States fire departments responded to an estimated average of 15,970 home structure fires involving clothes dryers or washing machines each year; and

 

     WHEREAS, those fires caused annual averages of thirteen civilian deaths, four hundred forty-four civilian injuries, and $238,000,000 in direct property damage; and

 

     WHEREAS, ninety-two percent of fires involved clothes dryers; and

 

     WHEREAS, fires caused by dryer malfunctions or lint buildup have occurred consistently in the past and continue to occur in the present despite improvements in technology; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 2017, a dryer fire in Kailua-Kona forced the evacuation of an entire condo; in 2019, a dryer fire in Kunia caused from too much lint injured a resident; and in 2021, a dryer fire in Aiea displaced a family of five and resulted in thousands of dollars in damages; and

 

     WHEREAS, many homes, as well as condo associations, have postponed services to clean clothes dryer vents due to the pandemic and have delayed service for almost two years; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2022, that the State Fire Council is requested to establish an educational awareness campaign on preventing clothes dryer fires; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the State Fire Council is requested to work with home insurance companies, property management companies, cooperative housing corporations, homeowners associations, planned community associations, and condominium associations on implementing preventative measures within their residential communities; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the State Fire Council.
