H.F. 150 Section 1. NEW SECTION . 279.87 Standards-based grading —— 1 prohibition. 2 A school district shall not utilize standards-based grading 3 to evaluate the performance of students who are enrolled in 4 grades six through twelve. For purposes of this section, 5 “standards-based grading” means a method of evaluating student 6 performance in which traditional academic subjects are broken 7 down into smaller learning objectives or skills and a student’s 8 performance is evaluated based on the extent to which the 9 student has mastered each particular learning objective or 10 skill. 11 EXPLANATION 12 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 13 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 14 This bill prohibits school districts from using 15 standards-based grading to evaluate the performance of students 16 who are enrolled in grades 6 through 12. The bill defines 17 “standards-based grading” to mean a method of evaluating 18 student performance in which traditional academic subjects are 19 broken down into smaller learning objectives or skills and a 20 student’s performance is evaluated based on the extent to which 21 the student has mastered each particular learning objective or 22 skill. 23 -1- LSB 1468YH (4) 91 jda/jh 1/ 1
