Section 260C.48, subsection 1, paragraph a, 1 2 subparagraph (2), Code 2015, is amended to read as follows: 1 3 (2) Special training and at least six thousand hours of 1 4 recent and relevant work experience in the occupational area 1 5 or related occupational area in which the instructor teaches 1 6 classes if the instructor possesses less than a baccalaureate 1 7 degree in the area or related area of study or occupational 1 8 area in which the instructor is teaching classes. If the 1 9 instructor is a licensed practitioner who holds a career 1 10 and technical endorsement under chapter 272, relevant work 1 11 experience in the occupational area includes but is not limited 1 12 to classroom instruction in a career and technical education 1 13 subject area offered by a school district or accredited 1 14 nonpublic school. 1 15 EXPLANATION 1 16 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 1 17 the explanation's substance by the members of the general assembly. 1 18 Under current law, in order to qualify as a community 1 19 college instructor in the subject area of career and technical 1 20 education, a person must have a baccalaureate or graduate 1 21 degree in the area or a related area of study or occupational 1 22 area in which the community college instructor is teaching 1 23 classes or must have special training and at least 6,000 hours 1 24 of recent and relevant work experience in the occupational area 1 25 or related area. This bill allows a licensed practitioner who 1 26 holds a career and technical endorsement on the practitioner's 1 27 Iowa practitioner license and who has work experience in a 1 28 career and technical occupational area as a classroom teacher 1 29 in a school district or accredited nonpublic school to count 1 30 those hours of teaching toward the 6,000 hours of relevant work 1 31 experience.
