House Resolution 104 - Introduced HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 104 BY MURPHY A Resolution urging Congress to save Social Security. 1 WHEREAS, the United States Congress and the current 2 federal administration are considering cuts and other 3 changes in Social Security and many other federal and 4 state human services programs; and 5 WHEREAS, the rights and benefits of working people 6 across America have already been drastically cut and 7 curtailed; and 8 WHEREAS, Social Security provides essential 9 financial support to 54.8 million people in the United 10 States, including 35.1 million retired workers; and 11 WHEREAS, Social Security provides modest benefits 12 averaging $14,000 per year for retired workers, based 13 on contributions paid into Social Security over a 14 worker’s lifetime of employment; and 15 WHEREAS, Americans deserve thoughtful and fair 16 Social Security reform to protect current and future 17 benefits and to ensure ongoing retirement security for 18 seniors, protections for persons who become disabled, 19 and benefits for the young children and spouses of 20 deceased and disabled workers; NOW THEREFORE, 21 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 22 That the House of Representatives urges the United 23 States Congress to ensure that Social Security remains 24 a critical source of protection for the people of 25 the United States and their families without further 26 increasing the retirement age or otherwise decreasing 27 benefits; and 28 -1- LSB 5678HH (2) 84 jr/nh 1/ 2
