WHEREAS,
during
World
War
II
there
was
a
tremendous
3
shortage
of
nurses,
and
to
help
meet
the
need,
the
4
United
States
started
the
cadet
nurse
program
in
5
1943;
and
6
WHEREAS,
the
Bolton
Act
unanimously
passed
both
7
houses
of
Congress
and
provided
grants
to
schools
8
of
nursing
to
facilitate
the
training
of
nurses
to
9
serve
in
the
armed
forces,
in
government
and
civilian
10
hospitals,
in
health
agencies,
and
in
war-related

industries;
and
1
WHEREAS,
a
student
nurse
who
joined
the
Cadet
Nurse
2
Corps
was
eligible
for
a
government
subsidy
that
paid
3
for
her
tuition,
books,
and
uniforms
as
well
as
a
small
4
living
stipend;
and
5
WHEREAS,
cadets
pledged
to
actively
serve
in
6
essential
civilian,
military,
or
other
federal
or
7
government
services
for
the
duration
of
the
war;
and
8
WHEREAS,
by
the
time
the
program
graduated
its
last
9
students
in
1948,
more
than
124,000
nurses
received
10
training
and
more
than
1,100
of
the
nation’s
1,300
11
nursing
schools
participated;
NOW
THEREFORE,
12
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,
That
13
the
House
of
Representatives
commemorates
the
United
14
States
Cadet
Nurse
Corps
and
the
contributions
its
15
graduates
provided
to
the
war
effort.
