recognize

Vietnam

Veterans
Day.

WHEREAS,
the
Vietnam
Conflict
was
fought
in
Vietnam
3
from
1961
to
1975;
and
4
WHEREAS,
United
States
Armed
Forces
members
began
5
serving
in
an
advisory
role
to
the
South
Vietnamese
in
6
1961
because
it
was
believed
that
if
South
Vietnam
fell
7
to
a
Communist
government
then
Communism
would
spread
8
throughout
the
rest
of
Southeast
Asia;
and
9
WHEREAS,
in
1965,
United
States
Armed
Forces
ground
10
combat
units
arrived
in
Vietnam,
and
by
the
end
of
that
11
year
there
were
80,000
United
States
troops
in
Vietnam,
12
peaking
with
approximately
543,000
troops
in
1969;
and
13
WHEREAS,
on
January
27,
1973,
the
Treaty
of
Paris
14
was
signed,
requiring
the
release
of
all
United
15
States
prisoners
of
war
held
in
North
Vietnam
and
the
16
withdrawal
of
all
United
States
Armed
Forces
from
South
17
Vietnam;
and
18
WHEREAS,
the
withdrawal
of
United
States
Armed
19
Forces
from
Vietnam
was
completed
on
March
30,
20
1973;
and
21
WHEREAS,
America’s
military
involvement
in
Vietnam
22
became
unpopular,
so
that
the
men
and
women
who
23
survived,
along
with
the
more
than
58,000
brave
men
and
24
women
who
fought
and
died,
were
caught
in
a
crossfire
25
of
public
debate
and
denied
the
proper
respect
and
26
gratitude
they
deserved
for
serving
our
country;
and
27
WHEREAS,
these
noble
veterans
endured
harsh

conditions
and
inhumane
treatment
and
should
be
1
remembered
for
their
selfless
service,
having
fulfilled
2
their
duty
with
the
highest
degree
of
valor
and
giving

of
themselves
in
the
name
of
freedom
and
for
the
rights
4
of
all
Americans;
and
5
WHEREAS,
their
sacrifice
has
been
integral
to
6
preserving
our
cherished
way
of
life;
and
7
WHEREAS,
it
is
fitting
that
we
extend
our
admiration
8
and
heartfelt
gratitude
to
those
servicemen
and
9
servicewomen
who
served
on
the
battlefields
of
Vietnam
10
and
returned
safely,
to
those
who
returned
home
scarred
11
of
body
and
mind,
and
to
those
who
were
killed
or
are
12
still
missing;
NOW
THEREFORE,

BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,
That
14
the
House
of
Representative
recognizes
March
30,
2012,
15
as
Vietnam
Veterans
Day
and
urges
all
Iowans
to
take
16
time
on
that
date
to
honor
those
members
of
the
United
17
States
Armed
Forces
who
served
in
Vietnam.
