Syndrome
Day
in
Iowa.

WHEREAS,
Angelman
syndrome
(AS)
is
a
neuro-genetic
3
disorder
characterized
by
developmental
delay,
4
lack
of
speech,
seizures,
and
walking
and
balance
5
disorders;
and
6
WHEREAS,
AS
is
a
rare
disorder
that
affects
an
7
estimated
one
out
of
10,000
to
15,000
people
and
8
individuals
with
AS
will
require
life-long
care;
and
9
WHEREAS,
AS
is
difficult
to
diagnose
and
the
10
unique
clinical
features
of
AS
often
do
not
manifest
11
themselves
until
after
one
year
of
age,
and
it
can
12
take
several
years
before
a
correct
clinical
diagnosis
13
becomes
obvious;
and
14
WHEREAS,
a
clinical
diagnosis
of
AS
shares
15
similarities
with
clinical
diagnoses
of
other
16
disorders,
without
genetic
confirmation,
and
AS
may
be
17
confused
with
Rett
syndrome
or
other
disorders;
NOW

THEREFORE,

BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,

That
the
House
of
Representatives
recognizes
September
21
23,
2012,
as
Angelman
Syndrome
Day
in
Iowa,
with
the
22
hope
that
this
resolution
will
raise
awareness
of
23
this
syndrome
and
thus
increase
early
detection
and
24
treatment.
