                    HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.    
                    BY  HIGHFILL and ABDUL=SAMAD
  1  1 A Resolution recognizing the relationship between
  1  2    Taiwan and the State of Iowa, supporting Taiwan's
  1  3    efforts to secure entry into the Trans=Pacific
  1  4    Partnership, and endorsing the signing of a
  1  5    bilateral investment agreement between Taiwan and
  1  6    the United States.
  1  7    WHEREAS, relations between the Republic of China
  1  8 (Taiwan) and the United States, and in particular the
  1  9 State of Iowa with which Taiwan shares sister=city
  1 10 and sister=state ties, are marked by strong bilateral
  1 11 trade, educational and cultural exchanges, and
  1 12 tourism; and
  1 13    WHEREAS, Taiwan, in order to contribute to greater
  1 14 regional integration in the Asia=Pacific region
  1 15 and further promote bilateral investment and trade
  1 16 relations with the United States, seeks to join the
  1 17 Trans=Pacific Partnership, the proposed 21st century
  1 18 trade agreement between the United States and 11 other
  1 19 Asia=Pacific Rim countries; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, negotiations for a bilateral investment
  1 21 agreement between Taiwan and the United States are an
  1 22 important step toward further strengthening bilateral
  1 23 trade and paving the way for entering into a free trade
  1 24 agreement between our two nations thereby increasing
  1 25 Iowa's exports to Taiwan and creating bilateral
  1 26 investment and technical collaboration through tariff
  1 27 reduction and other trade facilitation measures; NOW
  1 28 THEREFORE,
  2  1 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That
  2  2 the House of Representatives affirms its commitment to
  2  3 the strong and deepening sister=city and sister=state
  2  4 relationships between Taiwan and the State of Iowa,
  2  5 reaffirms its support for Taiwan's efforts to secure
  2  6 entry into the Trans=Pacific Partnership to contribute
  2  7 to greater regional integration, and endorses the
  2  8 signing of a bilateral investment agreement between
  2  9 Taiwan and the United States to increase exports and
  2 10 facilitate trade and investment with Taiwan; and
  2 11    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the
  2 12 House of Representatives is hereby directed to send a
  2 13 copy of this Resolution to United States Secretary of
  2 14 State John F. Kerry, the Taipei Economic and Cultural
  2 15 Office in Chicago, Illinois, and the members of Iowa's
  2 16 congressional delegation.
