House Resolution 17 - Introduced PAG LIN HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. BY SMITH and FISHER 1 1 A Resolution honoring the Marshalltown Rotary Club on 1 2 its centennial anniversary. 1 3 WHEREAS, Marshalltown banker and businessman 1 4 Wallace H. Arney organized an informal meeting attended 1 5 by 13 local businessmen, which was followed by an 1 6 organizational meeting of the Marshalltown Rotary 1 7 Club on July 7, 1915, attended by 52 prospective 1 8 members; and 1 9 WHEREAS, though the Board of Rotary International 1 10 initially ruled that a club could not succeed in a town 1 11 of less than 25,000 residents, the persistence of the 1 12 founding members resulted in permission to establish 1 13 the 185th Rotary Club in the world; and 1 14 WHEREAS, the first meeting of the new club was 1 15 held on July 19, 1915, at the Pilgrim Hotel at which 1 16 Mr. Arney was elected to serve as the club's first 1 17 president; and 1 18 WHEREAS, the club has grown its membership to 172, 1 19 making it the largest service club in Marshalltown and 1 20 one of the largest Rotary Clubs in the state; and 1 21 WHEREAS, while the city of Marshalltown and the 1 22 Marshalltown Rotary Club have seen many changes over 1 23 the years, the club continues to provide "Service 1 24 Above Self" by working to make lasting improvements 1 25 around the world and at home in Marshalltown and the 1 26 surrounding area; NOW THEREFORE, 1 27 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 1 28 That the House of Representatives congratulates the 2 1 Marshalltown Rotary Club on the 100th anniversary of 2 2 its founding in 1915.
