S.F. 199 Section 1. Section 256.9, Code 2023, is amended by adding 1 the following new subsection: 2 NEW SUBSECTION . 66. Provide educational resources and 3 technical assistance to school districts related to chartering 4 career and technical student organizations that comply with 5 the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement 6 Act of 2006, codified at 20 U.S.C. §2301 et seq., as amended, 7 and rules adopted by the state board, including career and 8 technical student organizations related to robotics and 9 robotics teams and competitions. 10 Sec. 2. Section 256.11, subsection 5, paragraph h, 11 subparagraph (1), subparagraph division (c), Code 2023, is 12 amended to read as follows: 13 (c) Applied sciences, technology, engineering, and 14 manufacturing, including transportation, distribution, 15 logistics, architecture, and construction , and robotics . 16 Sec. 3. NEW SECTION . 280.13D High school athletic 17 organizations —— robotics. 18 1. An organization that receives moneys from a school 19 district to pay dues or membership fees, or moneys from a 20 nonpublic school originating from the state to pay dues or 21 membership fees, may sponsor or administer interscholastic 22 contests or competitions related to robotics. For purposes 23 of this section, “organization” means the same as defined in 24 section 280.13. 25 2. This section shall not be construed to prohibit 26 an organization from sponsoring or administering other 27 interscholastic contests or competitions. 28 EXPLANATION 29 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 30 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 31 This bill relates to robotics curriculum and extracurricular 32 activities, including requiring the department of education 33 (DE) to provide technical assistance to school districts 34 related to chartering career and technical student 35 -1- LSB 1694XS (2) 90 jda/jh 1/ 2
S.F. 199 organizations, modifying the career and technical education 1 curriculum provided to students enrolled in grades 9 through 12 2 in school districts and charter schools to include robotics, 3 and authorizing high school athletic organizations to sponsor 4 interscholastic contests related to robotics. 5 The bill requires DE to provide educational resources and 6 technical assistance to school districts related to chartering 7 career and technical student organizations that comply with 8 federal law and rules adopted by the state board, including 9 organizations related to robotics and robotics teams and 10 competitions. 11 The bill modifies the career and technical education 12 service areas curriculum provided to students enrolled in 13 grades 9 through 12 in school districts and charter schools to 14 provide that robotics may be taught in the applied sciences, 15 technology, engineering, and manufacturing area. 16 The bill provides that high school athletic organizations 17 that receive moneys from a school district to pay dues or 18 membership fees, or moneys from a nonpublic school originating 19 from the state to pay dues or membership fees, may sponsor or 20 administer interscholastic contests or competitions related to 21 robotics. 22 -2- LSB 1694XS (2) 90 jda/jh 2/ 2
