                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO.    
                      BY  MATHIS and D. JOHNSON
  1  1 A Resolution recognizing and congratulating Art Cullen
  1  2    on winning the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in editorial
  1  3    writing.
  1  4    WHEREAS, Art Cullen is the editor of The Storm Lake
  1  5 Times, a twice weekly newspaper with a circulation of
  1  6 3,000; and
  1  7    WHEREAS, Mr. Cullen has written for The Storm Lake
  1  8 Times since its founding in 1990, writing hundreds of
  1  9 editorials on all manner of topics of public interest
  1 10 to Iowans; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, Mr. Cullen was awarded the 2017 Pulitzer
  1 12 Prize in editorial writing, with a prize of $15,000,
  1 13 for his editorials on environmental matters in Buena
  1 14 Vista, Calhoun, and Sac counties; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, Mr. Cullen is one of only six Iowans to win
  1 16 the Pulitzer Prize in editorial writing; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, the Pulitzer Prize Board praised Mr.
  1 18 Cullen's work as "fueled by tenacious reporting,
  1 19 impressive expertise and engaging writing that
  1 20 successfully challenged powerful corporate agricultural
  1 21 interests in Iowa"; and
  1 22    WHEREAS, Mr. Cullen in his writing has always
  1 23 shown a strong passion for sound environmental and
  1 24 agricultural policy in Iowa; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, Mr. Cullen has shown an admirable
  1 26 commitment to furthering journalism in Iowa, with the
  1 27 philosophy that "The Storm Lake Times should be as good
  1 28 at covering Storm Lake as the New York Times is at
  2  1 covering New York"; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  2    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2  3 recognizes and congratulates Art Cullen for his
  2  4 outstanding achievement in winning the 2017 Pulitzer
  2  5 Prize in editorial writing.
