Senate Resolution 108 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 108 BY SWEENEY A Resolution recognizing National Agriculture Week. 1 WHEREAS, Iowa has 84,900 farms accounting for 30.5 2 million acres of land dedicated to farming with more 3 than 95 percent of Iowa farms owned by families; and 4 WHEREAS, Iowa consistently ranks first nationally 5 in the production of corn, hogs, and eggs; first or 6 second nationally in the production of soybeans; fourth 7 nationally in the number of cattle and calves fed; 8 seventh nationally in turkey production; and twelfth 9 nationally in milk production; and 10 WHEREAS, Iowa consistently ranks first in the 11 production of ethanol and biodiesel fuel; and 12 WHEREAS, in 2020, Iowa generated $26.2 billion in 13 agricultural cash receipts; and 14 WHEREAS, March 21 through March 27 is National 15 Agriculture Week, dedicated to increasing the public 16 awareness of agriculture’s vital role in our society 17 and recognizing this nation’s unique role in producing 18 food, fiber, and fuel for the world; and 19 WHEREAS, this year’s National Agriculture Week 20 includes National Agriculture Day commemorated on March 21 22, with the first such occasion celebrated 49 years 22 ago, when persons gathered to nationally recognize this 23 country’s unique mission to provide the world with the 24 necessities of life; and 25 WHEREAS, this year’s National Agriculture Week 26 includes a Celebration of Modern Agriculture on the 27 National Mall in Washington, D.C., hosting a wide 28 -1- LSB 6271XS (2) 89 da/rn 1/ 2
S.R. 108 range of events in tribute to American agriculture and 1 honoring its farmers and ranchers; and 2 WHEREAS, this year’s National Agriculture Week is 3 an opportunity to encourage persons to understand how 4 food, fuel, fiber, and pharmaceuticals are produced, 5 to appreciate the function of farmers and ranchers in 6 producing abundant and affordable supplies of food, 7 fuel, fiber, and pharmaceuticals, to acknowledge the 8 essential role of agriculture in maintaining a vibrant 9 economy, and to allow the next generation to consider 10 career opportunities in agriculture; NOW THEREFORE, 11 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 12 recognizes March 21 through March 27 as National 13 Agriculture Week, and encourages all Iowans as 14 residents of one of the leading agricultural states in 15 the nation to commemorate and celebrate the invaluable 16 contributions made by this nation’s farmers and 17 ranchers and especially Iowa farmers; and 18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this 19 resolution be sent to the Agriculture Council of 20 America. 21 -2- LSB 6271XS (2) 89 da/rn 2/ 2
