Bill Title: Amends the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Law of the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois. Provides that the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity shall make grants to units of local government and school districts for the redevelopment of unused public buildings into housing units to be rented at below-market rates. Provides that a portion of the space redeveloped with grants and financial assistance to be set aside for minorities, women, and persons with disabilities.

20 ILCS 605/605-1055 new

Amends the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Law of the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois. Provides that the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity shall make grants to units of local government and school districts for the redevelopment of unused public buildings into housing units to be rented at below-market rates. 1 AN ACT concerning State government.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The Department of Commerce and Economic
5Opportunity Law of the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois
6is amended by adding Section 605-1055 as follows:
7 (20 ILCS 605/605-1055 new)
8 Sec. 605-1055. Grants to redevelop unused public
9buildings. The Department shall make grants and provide
10financial assistance to units of local government and school
11districts for the rehabilitation and redevelopment of unused
12public buildings into housing units to be rented at
13below-market rates. The Department shall by rule provide for a
14portion of the space rehabilitated and redeveloped with grants
15and financial assistance provided under this Section to be set
16aside for minorities, women, and persons with disabilities.
