1 | AN ACT concerning elections.

2 | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
| |||||||||||||||||||
3 | represented in the General Assembly:

4 | Section 5. The Election Code is amended by changing Section | |||||||||||||||||||
5 | 25-8 as follows:

7 | Sec. 25-8. U.S. Senator. | |||||||||||||||||||
8 | (a) When a vacancy shall occur in the office of United | |||||||||||||||||||
9 | States
Senator from this state, the Governor shall make | |||||||||||||||||||
10 | temporary appointment , subject to subsection (b), to
fill such | |||||||||||||||||||
11 | vacancy until the next election of representatives in Congress,
| |||||||||||||||||||
12 | at which time such vacancy shall be filled by election, and the | |||||||||||||||||||
13 | senator so
elected shall take office as soon thereafter as he | |||||||||||||||||||
14 | shall receive his
certificate of election.

15 | (b) An appointment under subsection (a) is subject to | |||||||||||||||||||
16 | approval by a majority vote of a commission consisting of the | |||||||||||||||||||
17 | President and Minority Leader of the Senate, the Speaker and | |||||||||||||||||||
18 | Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, and 16 members | |||||||||||||||||||
19 | appointed 4 each by those legislative leaders. | |||||||||||||||||||
