1 | HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Many areas of society suffer from systemic racism, | ||||||
3 | and in Illinois, minorities who work in government and politics | ||||||
4 | are painfully aware that racism still exists; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, No minority should have to contend with anyone who | ||||||
6 | intentionally erects roadblocks to their advancement based on | ||||||
7 | their race; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, No minority legislator, lobbyist, legislative | ||||||
9 | staffer, or campaign worker should feel abused, threatened, or | ||||||
10 | extorted based on their race; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, To constantly encounter racism on a daily basis is | ||||||
12 | a truly exhausting and an utterly defeatist way to live and no | ||||||
13 | one should have to endure it, especially while attempting to do | ||||||
14 | the work of the public; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, When minorities choose to leave careers in public | ||||||
16 | service due to racism all Illinoisans suffer the loss of their | ||||||
17 | commitment to creating a better Illinois; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Every minority in every area of society, | ||||||
19 | regardless of age, race, physical appearance, gender | ||||||
20 | expression, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation has |

1 | stories of having to deal with racism; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Many minorities do not feel safe enough to speak | ||||||
3 | up because the truth can still cost them their career; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Despite the fact that members of the General | ||||||
5 | Assembly have adopted policies against racism in the workplace | ||||||
6 | and training is available, the culture of racism persists and | ||||||
7 | extends beyond those subject to such policies; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, The time has come for us to raise our collective | ||||||
9 | voices and share our stories; therefore, be it
| ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
11 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE | ||||||
12 | CONCURRING HEREIN, that those supporting this resolution are | ||||||
13 | committed to doing better and working to change the culture of | ||||||
14 | racism that befouls state government; and be it further
| ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, That in this upcoming election cycle we commit to | ||||||
16 | challenging every elected official, every candidate, every | ||||||
17 | staffer, and every participant in our democratic process to do | ||||||
18 | better; and be it further
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
20 | presented to every member of the General Assembly, the Illinois |
