| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The Honorable Lee A. Daniels was elected to serve | ||||||
3 | sixteen terms, from January 1975 until January 2007, in the | ||||||
4 | Illinois General Assembly as the State Representative of DuPage | ||||||
5 | County; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The Honorable Lee A. Daniels was elected by his | ||||||
7 | peers and colleagues in January 1983, to lead the House | ||||||
8 | Republican caucus in the Illinois House of Representatives, | ||||||
9 | thus making him the House Republican Leader; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Lee A. Daniels led his fellow Republicans for 20 | ||||||
11 | years, from 1983 until 2003, which was a period in which both | ||||||
12 | DuPage County and the entire State of Illinois experienced | ||||||
13 | tremendous challenges but also great prosperity; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, As the leader of the Republicans in the Illinois | ||||||
15 | House of Representatives, Lee A. Daniels was a part of a long | ||||||
16 | line of Illinois political leaders dating back to Abraham | ||||||
17 | Lincoln, which occupied the same position on behalf of the Whig | ||||||
18 | Party in 1838 and 1839; and

19 | WHEREAS, Lee A. Daniels was honored in January 1995 when | ||||||
20 | his colleagues elected him to the position of Speaker of the | ||||||
21 | Illinois House of Representatives for the 89th General |

1 | Assembly; and

2 | WHEREAS, The 89th General Assembly leadership of Lee A. | ||||||
3 | Daniels as Speaker of the House was marked with path-breaking | ||||||
4 | achievements in Illinois history, including the reorganization | ||||||
5 | of the Chicago Public Schools, passage of a charter school law, | ||||||
6 | the reorganization of the systems of Illinois higher education, | ||||||
7 | the extension of property tax cap opportunities to cover all | ||||||
8 | 102 Illinois counties, expansion of the system of registration | ||||||
9 | for sex offenders, public assistance reform, and a statewide | ||||||
10 | program of help for persons with developmental disabilities | ||||||
11 | that has received nationwide honor and recognition; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, In recognition of his leadership as Speaker of the | ||||||
13 | House, the Illinois State Capitol will from now on contain a | ||||||
14 | permanent portrait memorial of the Honorable Lee A. Daniels, so | ||||||
15 | that the people of Illinois can recognize and remember his life | ||||||
16 | and public service; therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
18 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
19 | we congratulate the Honorable Lee A. Daniels upon the occasion | ||||||
20 | of the unveiling of his official portrait; and be it further
| ||||||
21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
22 | presented to the Honorable Lee A. Daniels as a permanent |
