| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, State Representative Monique D. Davis and the | ||||||
3 | members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened | ||||||
4 | to learn of the death of Dr. Shirley Irene DuBois of | ||||||
5 | Jacksonville, North Carolina, who passed away on February 18, | ||||||
6 | 2015; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Dr. Dubois was born in Chicago on August 6, 1938 | ||||||
8 | to Houston and Naomi (nee Evans) Gaines; she attended | ||||||
9 | elementary and high school in Chicago and graduated from the | ||||||
10 | University of Chicago Laboratory School; she then attended | ||||||
11 | Chicago Teachers College (now Chicago State University) to | ||||||
12 | fulfill her desire to become a teacher; she married Lee Andrew | ||||||
13 | Pittman; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Dr. Dubois worked in the Chicago Public Schools | ||||||
15 | until her retirement in 1992; while working in the Chicago | ||||||
16 | school system, she earned a master's degree from Northwestern | ||||||
17 | University and a Ph.D. in public policy from the University of | ||||||
18 | Illinois at Chicago; she later completed the Chicago | ||||||
19 | principal's exam and was selected to become principal at Walter | ||||||
20 | Gresham Elementary School; after completing a sabbatical | ||||||
21 | leave, she taught reading to Title I students until her early | ||||||
22 | retirement; shortly after retiring, she worked for 3 years as a | ||||||
23 | staff development specialist for the Teachers Academy for Math & |

1 | Science; during her teaching career, she managed real estate | ||||||
2 | property that she owned for over 30 years; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Dr. Dubois and her children traveled throughout | ||||||
4 | the United States, Mexico, Africa, and Asia; in retirement, she | ||||||
5 | became active on the session for Second Presbyterian Church in | ||||||
6 | Chicago, volunteering time to assist with various programs; she | ||||||
7 | was active in educational groups; she was a life member of the | ||||||
8 | National Alliance of Black School Educators, the Retired | ||||||
9 | Teachers Association of Chicago, and the University of Illinois | ||||||
10 | Alumni Association; she was a member and served several | ||||||
11 | positions in Pi Lambda Theta, the University of Chicago | ||||||
12 | chapter, an honorary educational society; she later served | ||||||
13 | terms as Treasurer and as an international board member of Pi | ||||||
14 | Lambda Theta; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Dr. Dubois married Floyd DuBois in 2002; in 2004, | ||||||
16 | they moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina to assist with | ||||||
17 | caring for their 2 granddaughters until they graduated from | ||||||
18 | high school and went to college; during their time in | ||||||
19 | Jacksonville, they became members of Evening View Missionary | ||||||
20 | Baptist Church and Covenant ARP churches; they also attended | ||||||
21 | New Vision M.B. Church; while in Jacksonville, they worked with | ||||||
22 | the Georgetown High School Alumni Association's "Annual Black | ||||||
23 | History Writing Contest"; and

1 | WHEREAS, Dr. Dubois was preceded in death by her parents | ||||||
2 | and her sisters, Dorothy Gaines Gregory and Ramona Gaines | ||||||
3 | Scott; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Dr. Dubois is survived by her husband, Dr. Floyd | ||||||
5 | DuBois; her children, Andrew Pittman and Janet Pittman Reed; | ||||||
6 | her granddaughters, Sheria Janelle Reed and Ayanna Janae Reed; | ||||||
7 | her brother-in-law, Charles Gregory; her nieces, Rosemary | ||||||
8 | Gregory Harmon and Cynthia Gregory; her 2 great-nieces; her | ||||||
9 | special cousin, Sidney Edwards Cole; her special caretaker, | ||||||
10 | Andrew Taylor; and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends; | ||||||
11 | therefore, be it

12 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
13 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
14 | mourn the passing of Dr. Shirley Irene DuBois, and extend our | ||||||
15 | sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
16 | and loved her; and be it further

17 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
18 | presented to the family of Dr. Dubois as an expression of our | ||||||
19 | deepest sympathy.
