| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to recognize the Village of Hanover Park | ||||||
4 | on the occasion of its 2023 Juneteenth celebration; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the | ||||||
6 | abolition of slavery in the United States and its territories | ||||||
7 | in 1865; it is also observed for celebrating African American | ||||||
8 | culture; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln enacted the | ||||||
10 | Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, freeing slaves | ||||||
11 | throughout the south; however, it was not until June 19, 1865, | ||||||
12 | over two years later and over two months after General Robert | ||||||
13 | E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, that slaves in | ||||||
14 | Galveston, Texas received the news that the Civil War had | ||||||
15 | ended and that the enslaved were freed, making it the official | ||||||
16 | end of slavery; and

17 | WHEREAS, Juneteenth has been typically observed on June | ||||||
18 | 19th since 1865; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, The Hanover Park Sister Cities Committee will | ||||||
20 | host Hanover Park's Juneteenth celebration at Ontarioville | ||||||
21 | Plaza in Hanover Park on June 18, 2023, with live music, |

1 | vendors, food trucks, activities for children, and more; | ||||||
2 | therefore, be it

3 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
4 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
5 | we recognize the Village of Hanover Park's Juneteenth | ||||||
6 | celebration as a time to reflect and to commemorate the end of | ||||||
7 | slavery; and be it further
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
9 | presented to the Village of Hanover Park as an expression of | ||||||
10 | our esteem and respect.
