2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Kenneth | ||||||
4 | Leo Harris of Chicago, who passed away on February 17, 2019; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Kenneth Harris was born to James and Nettie Harris | ||||||
7 | and raised on the South Side of Chicago during the Great | ||||||
8 | Depression; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Kenneth Harris attended Sherwood Elementary | ||||||
10 | School and later enrolled in Tilden Technical High School, | ||||||
11 | where he studied engineering and graduated in 1947; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, While attending Tilden High School, Kenneth | ||||||
13 | Harris was often forced to defend himself or sprint home to | ||||||
14 | avoid fights during those blatantly segregated times; the | ||||||
15 | experience paved the way for him to earn a track scholarship to | ||||||
16 | Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, In 1953, Kenneth Harris enlisted in the United | ||||||
18 | States Army and served in the Korean War; he was stationed in | ||||||
19 | Japan until his honorable discharge in 1955; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Kenneth Harris returned to Chicago, married the |

1 | love of his life, Delores Murphy, and raised three children, | ||||||
2 | Freddrenna M. Lyle, Katinka L. Harris-Spurlin, and Michael | ||||||
3 | Kenneth Harris Sr.; therefore, be it
| ||||||
4 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
5 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
6 | we mourn the passing of Kenneth Leo Harris and extend our | ||||||
7 | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
8 | and loved him; and be it further
| ||||||
9 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
10 | presented to the family of Kenneth Harris as an expression of | ||||||
11 | our deepest sympathy.
