2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Rep. Michael McAuliffe on | ||||||
4 | the
completion of his 23 years in the Illinois General | ||||||
5 | Assembly; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Rep. McAuliffe has been a resident of Chicago for | ||||||
7 | more than 55 years, since his
birth in the City of Big | ||||||
8 | Shoulders on December 7, 1963; on the day he was born, head | ||||||
9 | coach George
Halas was leading the Chicago Bears, Mayor Richard | ||||||
10 | J. Daley was leading Chicago's City Hall, and Chicago's
O'Hare | ||||||
11 | International Airport was finishing its first year as the | ||||||
12 | world's busiest airport; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, As Rep. McAuliffe enjoyed his boyhood, his father, | ||||||
14 | Roger McAuliffe, was elected
to the Illinois House of | ||||||
15 | Representatives in 1972 on the old "bullet vote" ballot, a | ||||||
16 | tribute by the McAuliffes' neighbors to
Roger's longtime | ||||||
17 | political work organizing and serving as a committeeman in | ||||||
18 | Chicago's 38th Ward;
as O'Hare Airport grew as an economic | ||||||
19 | engine, new challenges faced Chicago's far northwest side
as a | ||||||
20 | community of neighborhoods; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Rep. McAuliffe worked with his father's | ||||||
22 | re-election campaigns through the 1970s and 1980s,
until his |

| |||||||
1 | father's tragic death in Wisconsin in July of 1996; the late | ||||||
2 | lawmaker's
constituents named Michael to fill the vacancy, and | ||||||
3 | he won election to the seat in his own right in
November of | ||||||
4 | that year; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, From 1996 through 2018, Rep. McAuliffe was | ||||||
6 | continuously re-elected by his
neighbors and constituents, | ||||||
7 | rising to become one of the deans of the Illinois House; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Rep. McAuliffe's longevity in office was marked by | ||||||
9 | his attention to constituent
service, a commitment that grew | ||||||
10 | with the diversity of his district; he was particularly | ||||||
11 | sensitive to
issues relating to O'Hare and air quality and | ||||||
12 | noise pollution, which threaten the
quality of life of the | ||||||
13 | neighborhood in which he lives and was born; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Rep. McAuliffe was, and is, a steadfast friend of | ||||||
15 | law enforcement and the men and
women who keep our communities | ||||||
16 | safe; he was, and is, a tower of civilian auxiliary achievement | ||||||
17 | in the support of our Illinois police officers; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, During his years in public service, Rep. McAuliffe | ||||||
19 | turned more and
more of his attention to issues of health care; | ||||||
20 | he became the lead advocate in the Illinois
General Assembly | ||||||
21 | for awareness of issues surrounding Hepatitis C, a scourge | ||||||
22 | afflicting too many
undiagnosed Americans; he was also at the |

| |||||||
1 | forefront of issues involving the availability of testing and
| ||||||
2 | treatment for breast cancer, disease screening for newborns, | ||||||
3 | and health/life care for retired U.S.
veterans and their | ||||||
4 | families; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Rep. McAuliffe was considered a purist in matters | ||||||
6 | relating to the business of the chamber and was considered a | ||||||
7 | strict adherent of the Constitution and our cherished system of | ||||||
8 | checks and balances; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, As a friend to all of his colleagues, Rep. | ||||||
10 | McAuliffe became one of the leaders of the
House Republican | ||||||
11 | Caucus within the Illinois General Assembly and was appointed | ||||||
12 | to serve as assistant
minority leader in the 100th and 101st | ||||||
13 | General Assemblies; he continued to serve as a caucus leader
| ||||||
14 | until his retirement; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Michael McAuliffe supported his family in | ||||||
16 | Illinois politics, starting with his mother, Judy McAuliffe, | ||||||
17 | and his father, Representative Roger
McAuliffe; then, as a | ||||||
18 | Representative in his own right, he was supported in turn by | ||||||
19 | his betrothed, the woman who would become Kim Morreale | ||||||
20 | McAuliffe, and their two children, Conor and
Bianca; now it is | ||||||
21 | time for him to return the support they have given him over the
| ||||||
22 | years; therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
2 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
3 | we congratulate Rep. Michael McAuliffe on the completion of his | ||||||
4 | 23 years in the Illinois General Assembly, and we wish him a | ||||||
5 | long and happy life with new life challenges and the company of | ||||||
6 | his family; and be it further
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, That we remember and thank Rep. McAuliffe for | ||||||
8 | being a friend and advocate for the City
of Chicago; and be it | ||||||
9 | further
| ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
11 | presented to Rep. McAuliffe
and his wife Kim Morreale McAuliffe | ||||||
12 | as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
