2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Stephen Reid, | ||||||
4 | Jr. for receiving the "2013 Rural Physician of Excellence | ||||||
5 | Award" from the Illinois Rural Health Association; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, One of the biggest healthcare challenges across | ||||||
7 | our nation is the shortage of physicians who practice in rural | ||||||
8 | settings; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. earned his medical degree | ||||||
10 | from Northwestern University in 1976 and completed his | ||||||
11 | residency at the University of Illinois in 1982; he later | ||||||
12 | completed his Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the Roswell Park | ||||||
13 | Cancer Institute in 1984; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, After practicing medicine in a large urban setting | ||||||
15 | for many years, Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. left Evanston Hospital in | ||||||
16 | 1997 to embark on a career practicing in a rural area, joining | ||||||
17 | the staff at the Weber Medical Clinic and Richland Memorial | ||||||
18 | Hospital in Olney; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, In recognition of his efforts to train medical | ||||||
20 | students and physician assistants from Southern Illinois | ||||||
21 | University on the challenges and benefits of practicing in |

| |||||||
1 | rural areas, Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. was awarded the "Preceptor | ||||||
2 | of the Year" Award in 2012; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. has also helped plant the | ||||||
4 | seed to cultivate future home grown medical professionals by | ||||||
5 | participating in "Career Days" at East Richland Middle School; | ||||||
6 | and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. has lent his time and | ||||||
8 | expertise to many internal hospital committees to improve | ||||||
9 | services provided to patients, including those centered on | ||||||
10 | blood and tissues, ICU, long term care, patient care | ||||||
11 | evaluation, pharmacy, surgery, and tumors; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. has worked to raise | ||||||
13 | community awareness of breast cancer and is a huge supporter of | ||||||
14 | Richland County's Relay for Life by donning a "polyp" costume | ||||||
15 | and running in local triathlons to raise money for cancer | ||||||
16 | research; therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
18 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
19 | we commend Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. for his selfless service to | ||||||
20 | his community and the impact he has made on improving rural | ||||||
21 | health; and be it further
