2 | WHEREAS, The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology | ||||||
3 | at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was established | ||||||
4 | in 2003 to advance life science research and stimulate | ||||||
5 | bioeconomic development in Illinois by investing in the | ||||||
6 | burgeoning field of genomics; and

7 | WHEREAS, The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology | ||||||
8 | at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, a | ||||||
9 | state-of-the-art research facility with a structure designed | ||||||
10 | to promote communication and collaboration among its members, | ||||||
11 | was dedicated in 2007; and

12 | WHEREAS, The membership of the Carl R. Woese Institute for | ||||||
13 | Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois has grown to | ||||||
14 | comprise a transdisciplinary contingent of more than 200 | ||||||
15 | faculty and affiliate members and more than 700 other research | ||||||
16 | staff and students, all from more than 40 different academic | ||||||
17 | departments; and

18 | WHEREAS, The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology | ||||||
19 | at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is celebrating | ||||||
20 | its 15th anniversary of path-breaking genomic research to | ||||||
21 | address grand societal challenges in the areas of agriculture, | ||||||
22 | environmental conservation, health, wellness, technology, and |

2 | WHEREAS, The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology | ||||||
3 | at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is committed to | ||||||
4 | the use of science to positively impact society and also to the | ||||||
5 | larger goal of promoting an open dialogue between science and | ||||||
6 | society; therefore, be it

7 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
8 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
9 | we commend the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at | ||||||
10 | the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on its 15 years of | ||||||
11 | significant societal, scientific, and scholarly contributions | ||||||
12 | made to research at the intersection of science and society | ||||||
13 | within the state of Illinois, resulting in over $520M in | ||||||
14 | funding and the establishment of more than 20 start-up and | ||||||
15 | small companies; and be it further

16 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
17 | presented to the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology | ||||||
18 | at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as a symbol of | ||||||
19 | our respect and esteem.
