HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Mattie M.
4Levy Brown, who passed away on December 1, 2017; and
5 WHEREAS, Mattie Brown was born in McDowell, Alabama to Joe
6and Genie Levy on May 29, 1928; she was a member of the
7Palestine Baptist Church in Coatopa, Alabama and graduated from
8the Sumter County Training School in Livingston, Alabama; she
9married Frank Brown Sr. on August 5, 1950 and they briefly
10resided in Epes, Alabama before moving to Chicago; and
11 WHEREAS, Mattie Brown was a member of the Friendship
12Baptist Church for over 60 years, where she was part of the
13Contemporary Sunday School Class and Missionary Society; she
14was an active member of her Kirkland Avenue Block Club and
15believed in the power of voting; she enjoyed cooking, making
16Hog-Head Cheese from scratch for the new year and homemade ice
17cream; she had a passion for reading and teaching her
18grandchildren how to read; and
19 WHEREAS, Mattie Brown was preceded in death by her parents;
20her husband, Frank Brown Sr.; her son, Frank Brown Jr.; her
21brothers, Ellis Sr., Curtis, Fred, and Edward Sr.; and her
22sisters, Gertrude, Louise, and Mary Lou; and

1 WHEREAS, Mattie Brown is survived by her children, Carrie
2Brown Billups (John), Maxine Brown-Lockhart, Maretta
3Brown-Miller, Cornelius O. Brown, Juanita Brown, and Catherine
4Jones Brown; her grandchildren, Deidre, Burgundy, Cinnamon,
5Candice, Marnita, Gervaise, Richard II, Matthew II, Marissa,
6Justin, and Starry; her great-grandchildren, Shawn Jr., Nylah,
7Kaylah, Chloe, Alexander, Donovon, Isabelle, Nicholas,
8Terrance Jr., and Cayden; her sisters-in-law, Leona Brown
9Jones, Clara Jones, Shirley Brown, and Marie Brown; and
10numerous nieces, nephews, and friends; therefore, be it
11 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13mourn the passing of Mattie M. Levy Brown, and extend our
14sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew
15and loved her; and be it further
16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Mattie Brown as an expression of our
18deepest sympathy.
