1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The State of Illinois welcomes all religious | ||||||
3 | beliefs, traditions, and heritages, and has
full confidence | ||||||
4 | that the United States Constitution and the laws of Illinois | ||||||
5 | protect all citizens from
discrimination; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Many immigrants have come to our nation to escape | ||||||
7 | government-sanctioned
persecution of their faith; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, The State of Illinois has a history of embracing | ||||||
9 | individuals' right to practice the faith tradition of
their | ||||||
10 | choice within the boundaries of the law and free of government | ||||||
11 | interference; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, The Illinois General Assembly finds all forms of | ||||||
13 | discrimination,
including those forms of discrimination | ||||||
14 | targeting religion or belief, to be abhorrent; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The religion of Islam is practiced by over 1.6 | ||||||
16 | billion Muslims around the world; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, In Illinois alone, there are more than 400,000 | ||||||
18 | Muslims and 300 mosques, representing various racial and ethnic | ||||||
19 | sects of Islam; and

1 | WHEREAS, The Muslim community in Illinois has reported | ||||||
2 | increased incidences of
discrimination involving violations of | ||||||
3 | civil rights; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Targeted discrimination of individuals in our | ||||||
5 | communities, schools, and workplaces
on the basis of religion, | ||||||
6 | heritage, and beliefs cannot be tolerated and should not be | ||||||
7 | accepted as a
fundamental element of our society; therefore, be | ||||||
8 | it
| ||||||
9 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
10 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
11 | we reject all forms of
discrimination; and be it further
| ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, That we urge tolerance and acceptance of | ||||||
13 | religious beliefs,
traditions, and heritages in our | ||||||
14 | communities to ensure all individuals residing in Illinois are
| ||||||
15 | protected from discrimination as enumerated in the United | ||||||
16 | States Constitution and by the laws of Illinois.
