HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The State of Illinois welcomes all religious
3beliefs, traditions, and heritages, and has full confidence
4that the United States Constitution and the laws of Illinois
5protect all citizens from discrimination; and
6 WHEREAS, Many immigrants have come to our nation to escape
7government-sanctioned persecution of their faith; and
8 WHEREAS, The State of Illinois has a history of embracing
9individuals' right to practice the faith tradition of their
10choice within the boundaries of the law and free of government
11interference; and
12 WHEREAS, The Illinois General Assembly finds all forms of
13discrimination, including those forms of discrimination
14targeting religion or belief, to be abhorrent; and
15 WHEREAS, The religion of Islam is practiced by over 1.6
16billion Muslims around the world; and
17 WHEREAS, In Illinois alone, there are more than 400,000
18Muslims and 300 mosques, representing various racial and ethnic
19sects of Islam; and

1 WHEREAS, The Muslim community in Illinois has reported
2increased incidences of discrimination involving violations of
3civil rights; and
4 WHEREAS, Targeted discrimination of individuals in our
5communities, schools, and workplaces on the basis of religion,
6heritage, and beliefs cannot be tolerated and should not be
7accepted as a fundamental element of our society; therefore, be
8it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11we reject all forms of discrimination; and be it further
12 RESOLVED, That we urge tolerance and acceptance of
13religious beliefs, traditions, and heritages in our
14communities to ensure all individuals residing in Illinois are
15protected from discrimination as enumerated in the United
16States Constitution and by the laws of Illinois.
