2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Matron Mary Ann Malata on | ||||||
4 | the occasion of her 80th birthday on October 17, 2022; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Matron Malata was born in Phalombe, Mulanje | ||||||
6 | District, Malawi, East Africa on October 17, 1942; she | ||||||
7 | finished her primary education in 1959 and then taught in | ||||||
8 | primary schools from 1960 to 1961; she attended secondary | ||||||
9 | school at Cambridge, England from 1964 to 1966; she took part | ||||||
10 | in a general nursing program in Ireland from 1967 to 1970; she | ||||||
11 | then took a midwifery course in the United Kingdom from 1971 to | ||||||
12 | 1972; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Matron Malata returned to Malawi in 1973 and | ||||||
14 | worked in several hospitals; she served as a district nursing | ||||||
15 | officer at Mzimba District Hospital from 1982 to 1997, | ||||||
16 | supervising hundreds of registered nurses and midwives, | ||||||
17 | enrolled nurses and midwives, patient attendants, and hospital | ||||||
18 | servants; she further continued her education, attending an | ||||||
19 | intensive Family Planning Training in New York City, New York | ||||||
20 | for three months in 1985; and

21 | WHEREAS, Matron Malata supervised nursing at Mzimba | ||||||
22 | District Hospital and in the surrounding health centres, |

1 | actively visiting these health centres and rural hospitals to | ||||||
2 | teach, encourage, and provide supplies while working to | ||||||
3 | improve the health care of persons in the district; her work | ||||||
4 | included midwifery, obstetric care, safe motherhood, exclusive | ||||||
5 | breastfeeding, child spacing, and family planning; she trained | ||||||
6 | traditional birth attendants, promoted under-fives outreach | ||||||
7 | clinics for childhood immunizations, opened and staffed new | ||||||
8 | health centres, and supervised psychiatric nursing, nursing | ||||||
9 | for tuberculosis patients, and nursing for post-surgical care; | ||||||
10 | she also educated others about HIV/AIDS, which included her | ||||||
11 | working at the new Tovwirane Centre; she additionally worked | ||||||
12 | with public health staff and village health committees to | ||||||
13 | improve hygiene and other public health interventions; during | ||||||
14 | her tenure, she was a key leader in moving 131 patients in four | ||||||
15 | hours without incident from the old Mzimba District Hospital | ||||||
16 | to the new Mzimba District Hospital on September 8, 1992; and

17 | WHEREAS, Matron Malata was recognized for her leadership | ||||||
18 | and nursing skills in the Mzimba District; for her many years | ||||||
19 | of service, she was elevated to the title of matron in 1995; | ||||||
20 | she retired from civil service to the Government of Malawi in | ||||||
21 | 1997; and

22 | WHEREAS, Matron Malata provided her skills to the | ||||||
23 | non-governmental organization AFRICARE from 1999 to 2003, | ||||||
24 | working towards the expansion of primary health care projects |

1 | in Mzimba District; wanting to continue contributing to the | ||||||
2 | health of people in the district, she worked at Mzimba | ||||||
3 | District Hospital on a month to month basis from 2004 to 2014; | ||||||
4 | and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Matron Malata has been a dedicated member of St. | ||||||
6 | Paul's Catholic Church in Mzimba for many years, participating | ||||||
7 | in many church and spiritual activities; she is devoted to her | ||||||
8 | family and her children; therefore, be it
| ||||||
9 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
10 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
11 | we congratulate Matron Mary Ann Malata on celebrating her 80th | ||||||
12 | birthday, and we recognize her for dedicating her life to | ||||||
13 | serving others; and be it further

14 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
15 | presented to Matron Malata as an expression of our esteem and | ||||||
16 | respect.
