Bill Title: Amends the Care of Students with Diabetes Act. Provides that a school shall maintain a supply of glucagon in any secure location that is immediately accessible to a school nurse or a delegated care aide if a student diagnosed with diabetes attends the school. Provides that schools shall obtain a prescription for glucagon, even if the school is not required to maintain the glucagon.

2 | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

3 | represented in the General Assembly:

4 | Section 5. The Care of Students with Diabetes Act is | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
5 | amended by changing Section 27 as follows:

7 | Sec. 27. Undesignated glucagon. A school may maintain a | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
8 | supply of glucagon in any secure location that is immediately | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
9 | accessible to a school nurse or a delegated care aide ; | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
10 | however, a school shall maintain a supply of glucagon in any | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
11 | secure location that is immediately accessible to a school | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
12 | nurse or a delegated care aide if a student diagnosed with | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
13 | diabetes attends the school. Schools shall obtain a | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
14 | prescription for glucagon, even if the school is not required | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
15 | to maintain the glucagon . A physician, a physician assistant | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
16 | who has prescriptive authority under Section 7.5 of the | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
17 | Physician Assistant Practice Act of 1987, or an advanced | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
18 | practice registered nurse who has prescriptive authority under | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
19 | Section 65-40 of the Nurse Practice Act may prescribe | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
20 | undesignated glucagon in the name of the school to be | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
21 | maintained for use when necessary. Any supply of undesignated | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
22 | glucagon must be maintained in accordance with the | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
23 | manufacturer's instructions. A school nurse or delegated care |

1 | aide may administer undesignated glucagon if he or she is | ||||||
2 | authorized to administer the undesignated glucagon through a | ||||||
3 | student's diabetes care plan and if the student's prescribed | ||||||
4 | glucagon is not available on-site or has expired. Immediately | ||||||
5 | after the administration of undesignated glucagon, a school | ||||||
6 | must notify the school nurse, unless the school nurse was the | ||||||
7 | one administering the undesignated glucagon, and the student's | ||||||
8 | parent or guardian or emergency contact, if known, and health | ||||||
9 | care provider of its use.
