1 | SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
| ||||||
3 | Assembly pays honor and respect to the truly great individuals
| ||||||
4 | who have served our country and, in doing so, have made the
| ||||||
5 | ultimate sacrifice for our nation; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Daniel Lee Kick was born on January 26, 1948 and | ||||||
7 | grew up in Riverton; he attended Riverton Grade School and | ||||||
8 | graduated from Riverton High School in 1966; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, After graduating high school, Daniel Lee Kick | ||||||
10 | enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was
deployed to | ||||||
11 | South Vietnam on September 25, 1967; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, PFC Kick served with the 1st Marine Division, 1st | ||||||
13 | Battalion, 5th Marines, H&S Company; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, From February 13 through February 23, 1968, the | ||||||
15 | 1st Battalion, 5th Marines were engaged
with heavily-armed and | ||||||
16 | well-entrenched North Vietnamese Army forces as part of the | ||||||
17 | Tet Offensive in the
city of Hue, South Vietnam; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, For six consecutive days during the fighting, PFC | ||||||
19 | Kick continuously risked his life by performing medevac and | ||||||
20 | resupply missions for his
embattled unit in the face of small |

fire, automatic weapons, and rocket fire; without a | ||||||
2 | doubt, his actions were directly influential in saving the | ||||||
3 | lives of many of his fellow Marines; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, While on a medevac run on the evening of February | ||||||
5 | 16, 1968, PFC Kick's vehicle was
ambushed by the enemy, and he | ||||||
6 | was mortally wounded; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, PFC Kick was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze | ||||||
8 | Star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam
Campaign | ||||||
9 | Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal; he was also awarded the | ||||||
10 | Vietnamese Military Merit
Medal and the Vietnamese Gallantry | ||||||
11 | Cross with Palm from the South Vietnam Government; his
name | ||||||
12 | can be found on Panel 40E Line 7 of the Vietnam Veterans | ||||||
13 | Memorial in Washington, D.C.; therefore, be it

14 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
15 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF | ||||||
16 | REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that the IL Route 54 bridge | ||||||
17 | crossing the Sangamon River near Riverton shall be designated | ||||||
18 | as the "PFC Daniel Lee Kick Memorial Bridge"; and be it further
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
| ||||||
20 | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
| ||||||
21 | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
| ||||||
22 | giving notice of the name "PFC Daniel Lee Kick Memorial |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | Bridge"; and be it further
| ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
3 | presented to the family of PFC Kick, the Mayor of Riverton, and | ||||||
4 | the Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
