1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Janet J. Lehman of Naperville, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on February 13, 2011; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, She was born Janet J. Coggins in Lenoir, North | ||||||
6 | Carolina; after graduating from Duke University, she was | ||||||
7 | working as a social worker in North Carolina when her employer | ||||||
8 | sent her to a summer program on alcohol studies at Yale | ||||||
9 | University; there, she met a young minister, Kenneth Lehman, | ||||||
10 | who worked on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Montana; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, They later realized that their callings were | ||||||
12 | intertwined and within a year were married; after a few years | ||||||
13 | in Montana, the couple moved to Naperville, where in 1960 they | ||||||
14 | co-founded Knox Presbyterian Church; Mrs. Lehman sang in the | ||||||
15 | choir and continued her career in social work; and

16 | WHEREAS, In 1990, Mrs. Lehman helped create a chapter of | ||||||
17 | the Stephen Ministry at Knox Presbyterian Church, where she | ||||||
18 | trained lay members in providing one-on-one care and counseling | ||||||
19 | to the bereaved, hospitalized, terminally ill, unemployed, and | ||||||
20 | those facing a crisis or life challenge; and

21 | WHEREAS, After raising her children, Mrs. Lehman received a |

1 | master's degree in social work from George Williams College in | ||||||
2 | Downers Grove and soon after began a 10-year career as a school | ||||||
3 | social worker in several area school districts, including | ||||||
4 | Naperville School District 204, as well as districts in | ||||||
5 | Yorkville, Oswego, Sandwich, and Lisle; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, In more recent years, she was a marriage counselor | ||||||
7 | and had a private counseling office in Oswego; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Janet Lehman is survived by her husband, Reverend | ||||||
9 | Kenneth Lehman; her son, Michael; her daughters, Ginny Shugert | ||||||
10 | and Tricia Ullestad; and her seven grandchildren; therefore, be | ||||||
11 | it

12 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL | ||||||
13 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
14 | her family and friends, the passing of Janet Lehman; and be it | ||||||
15 | further

16 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
17 | presented to the family of Janet Lehman as a symbol of our | ||||||
18 | sincere sympathy.
