SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
report that four and one-half million adults have been
diagnosed with liver disease across the nation and that liver
disease results in over 50,000 deaths annually; and
WHEREAS, Liver disease is any condition that damages the
liver and prevents it from functioning well; and
WHEREAS, Liver disease may be the result of different
causes, such as infection, genetics, or other risk factors;
these risk factors include heavy alcohol use, obesity, and
Type 2 diabetes; left untreated, liver disease can lead to
liver cancer and liver failure; and
WHEREAS, Liver disease can be treated by medication,
surgery, or lifestyle modifications depending on one's
diagnosis; and
WHEREAS, Increasing public awareness and understanding of
liver disease could lead to early diagnosis that can prevent
the progression of liver disease to liver cancer or liver
failure, while educating those of the risk factors can lead to
lifestyle changes that may lower one's chances of getting
liver disease; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare May 2023 as
"Liver Disease Awareness Month" in the State of Illinois to
bring attention to those battling liver disease and to the
importance of early detection and treatments; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the American Liver Foundation as a symbol of our
respect and esteem.
