SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
3report that four and one-half million adults have been
4diagnosed with liver disease across the nation and that liver
5disease results in over 50,000 deaths annually; and
6 WHEREAS, Liver disease is any condition that damages the
7liver and prevents it from functioning well; and
8 WHEREAS, Liver disease may be the result of different
9causes, such as infection, genetics, or other risk factors;
10these risk factors include heavy alcohol use, obesity, and
11Type 2 diabetes; left untreated, liver disease can lead to
12liver cancer and liver failure; and
13 WHEREAS, Liver disease can be treated by medication,
14surgery, or lifestyle modifications depending on one's
15diagnosis; and
16 WHEREAS, Increasing public awareness and understanding of
17liver disease could lead to early diagnosis that can prevent
18the progression of liver disease to liver cancer or liver
19failure, while educating those of the risk factors can lead to
20lifestyle changes that may lower one's chances of getting
21liver disease; therefore, be it

1 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare May 2023 as
3"Liver Disease Awareness Month" in the State of Illinois to
4bring attention to those battling liver disease and to the
5importance of early detection and treatments; and be it
6further
7 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the American Liver Foundation as a symbol of our
9respect and esteem.
