| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of
Joseph Denis Madigan Jr., who passed away | ||||||
4 | on May 21, 2012; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Joseph Madigan Jr. was born in Chicago in 1932; he | ||||||
6 | married Carol Ann Malloy in 1958; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Joseph Madigan Jr. was raised in Oak Park and | ||||||
8 | attended Fenwick High School and the University of Notre Dame; | ||||||
9 | after graduating from Notre Dame, he was commissioned as an | ||||||
10 | officer in the United States Navy; while in the Navy, he was | ||||||
11 | ordered to run retail operations, including a grocery exchange, | ||||||
12 | on a large Navy base in New Jersey; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Madigans was established in Chicago in 1881 by | ||||||
14 | Joseph Madigan Jr.'s paternal grandfather, Denis Joseph | ||||||
15 | Madigan; during his career, Joseph Madigan Jr. led an expansion | ||||||
16 | that took Madigans from its Madison and Crawford flagship to | ||||||
17 | the establishment of stores across Chicagoland, including | ||||||
18 | stores in Winston Plaza in Melrose Park, Yorktown Shopping | ||||||
19 | Center in Lombard, Woodfield Mall, Harlem Irving Plaza, and the | ||||||
20 | North Riverside Park and Chicago Ridge Malls, among many | ||||||
21 | others; and

1 | WHEREAS, Joseph Madigan Jr. was well known as a highly | ||||||
2 | creative and energetic merchant who foresaw and led a trend | ||||||
3 | towards fashionable, price-conscious clothing that has become | ||||||
4 | the norm in American retailing; and

5 | WHEREAS, Joseph Madigan Jr. was preceded in death by his | ||||||
6 | parents, Joseph D. Madigan and Florence Walsh Madigan, and his | ||||||
7 | sister, Elizabeth Ann "Bette" Morris; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Joseph Madigan Jr. is survived by his loving wife | ||||||
9 | of 53 years, Carol; his children and their families, Joseph and | ||||||
10 | his wife, Eileen and their children, Mary Carol, Joseph, | ||||||
11 | Michael, and Kathryn; John and his wife, Jennifer and their | ||||||
12 | children, John, Therese, Daniel, Genevieve, Helen, Christine, | ||||||
13 | and Michael Joseph; and Maria and her husband, Patrick Kelly, | ||||||
14 | and their children, Patrick Emmett and Caroline Rose; and his | ||||||
15 | sister, Nancy Schlacks; therefore, be it

16 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL | ||||||
17 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
18 | his family and friends, the passing of Joseph Denis Madigan | ||||||
19 | Jr.; and be it further

20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
21 | presented to the family of Joseph Madigan Jr. as an expression | ||||||
22 | of our sympathy.
