1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Epilepsy is a neurological disorder producing | ||||||
3 | brief
disturbances in the normal electrical functions of the | ||||||
4 | brain that temporarily affects a person's consciousness, | ||||||
5 | bodily movements,
or sensations, while creating long-term | ||||||
6 | effects on the lifestyle of
individuals with epilepsy; and

7 | WHEREAS, One in 26 people will develop epilepsy and one
in | ||||||
8 | 10 people will have an epileptic seizure during his or her
| ||||||
9 | lifetime; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Epilepsy can affect anyone regardless of their
| ||||||
11 | gender, race, age, religion, educational background, or
| ||||||
12 | socioeconomic status; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, More people suffer from epilepsy than from
| ||||||
14 | Parkinson's Disease, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, | ||||||
15 | and
cerebral palsy combined; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Epilepsy affects more than 65 million people
| ||||||
17 | worldwide; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Although there is no known cure for epilepsy,
| ||||||
19 | existing drug therapy, surgery, and other nonpharmacological | ||||||
20 | treatments enable approximately 80% of individuals with

1 | epilepsy to lead normal lives with no seizures or a significant
| ||||||
2 | reduction in seizures; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Epilepsy is a complex disorder that requires | ||||||
4 | further research to find a cure and prevention; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, The public is often unable to recognize common | ||||||
6 | seizure types or to respond with appropriate first aid; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The annual observance of Purple Day on March
26 | ||||||
8 | advocates for the rights, humane treatment, and appropriate
| ||||||
9 | education of all persons with epilepsy, while raising awareness
| ||||||
10 | with families, professionals, and the general public to better
| ||||||
11 | understand this lifelong disorder; therefore, be it
| ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
13 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate March 26, | ||||||
14 | 2014 as "Purple Day" and invite all citizens to participate by | ||||||
15 | wearing purple; and be it further
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, That we call upon all citizens, government | ||||||
17 | agencies,
public and private institutions, businesses, and | ||||||
18 | schools to recommit
our community to increasing awareness and | ||||||
19 | understanding of
epilepsy through education while ensuring | ||||||
20 | that all individuals with
epilepsy lead a full and productive | ||||||
21 | life; and be it further

1 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
2 | presented to Kurt W. Florian, Jr.,
President and Chief | ||||||
3 | Executive Officer of the
Epilepsy Foundation of Greater | ||||||
4 | Chicago, as an expression of our support for the purposes and | ||||||
5 | goals of "Purple Day".
