SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Over 40 years after Congress passed the
3Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), promising every
4worker the right to a safe job, the protections in OSHA have
5saved hundreds of thousands of lives and prevented millions of
6workplace injuries; and
7 WHEREAS, Despite current safety laws, more than 4,000,000
8workers are injured and thousands of workers are killed due to
9job hazards each year; and
10 WHEREAS, On April 28, 2014 organized labor will observe
11Workers' Memorial Day all across the country to remember those
12who have suffered and died on the job and to renew the fight
13for safe workplaces for all workers; therefore, be it
14 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize that as
16long as there are workers seriously injured or killed on the
17job, there will be a need to support stronger safety and health
18laws in our State and country and will work to that end; and be
19it further
20 RESOLVED, That we encourage the Illinois congressional
21delegation and President Barack Obama to continue to revise,

1revamp, and strengthen federal workplace safety laws and to
2properly fund OSHA programs and staff; and be it further
3 RESOLVED, That we offer our deep-felt sympathy and
4understanding to the families of workers who have been
5seriously injured or killed on the job; and be it further
6 RESOLVED, That we officially declare April 28, 2014 as
7Workers' Memorial Day in Illinois.
