1 | SENATE RESOLUTION | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, India is the world's largest democracy and, along | ||||||
3 | with the United States, upholds a system in which the supreme | ||||||
4 | power to govern is invested in the people; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, India's independence was achieved with the | ||||||
6 | principles of fairness, dignity, peace, and democracy in mind; | ||||||
7 | and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Our nations, both former British colonies, and | ||||||
9 | peoples have forged a close relationship due to our shared | ||||||
10 | beliefs in these and other ideals; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, The strong relationship between the United States | ||||||
12 | and India, based on mutual trust and respect, enables close | ||||||
13 | collaboration across a broad spectrum of strategic interests, | ||||||
14 | including counterterrorism, regional economic development, | ||||||
15 | human rights, and scientific research; and

16 | WHEREAS, The United States and India have balanced, | ||||||
17 | growing, and mutually beneficial trade and investment ties | ||||||
18 | that create jobs in both countries; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Americans of Indian descent have made lasting | ||||||
20 | contributions to the social and economic fabric of the United |

1 | States and in Illinois, with Chicago and its surrounding | ||||||
2 | suburbs home to the second-largest Indian American population | ||||||
3 | of any metropolitan area in the country; and

4 | WHEREAS, August 15, 2024 marks the 77th anniversary of | ||||||
5 | India's independence from British rule by the signing of the | ||||||
6 | Indian Independence Act in 1947, which partitioned what was | ||||||
7 | then British India into the two separate states of India and | ||||||
8 | Pakistan and established a free and independent Indian nation | ||||||
9 | following the long struggle of the Indian Independence | ||||||
10 | Movement; and

11 | WHEREAS, It is fitting and proper to celebrate with the | ||||||
12 | Indian people and to reaffirm the democratic principles on | ||||||
13 | which our two great nations were born; therefore, be it
