SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, India is the world's largest democracy and, along
3with the United States, upholds a system in which the supreme
4power to govern is invested in the people; and
5 WHEREAS, India's independence was achieved with the
6principles of fairness, dignity, peace, and democracy in mind;
7and
8 WHEREAS, Our nations, both former British colonies, and
9peoples have forged a close relationship due to our shared
10beliefs in these and other ideals; and
11 WHEREAS, The strong relationship between the United States
12and India, based on mutual trust and respect, enables close
13collaboration across a broad spectrum of strategic interests,
14including counterterrorism, regional economic development,
15human rights, and scientific research; and
16 WHEREAS, The United States and India have balanced,
17growing, and mutually beneficial trade and investment ties
18that create jobs in both countries; and
19 WHEREAS, Americans of Indian descent have made lasting
20contributions to the social and economic fabric of the United

1States and in Illinois, with Chicago and its surrounding
2suburbs home to the second-largest Indian American population
3of any metropolitan area in the country; and
4 WHEREAS, August 15, 2024 marks the 77th anniversary of
5India's independence from British rule by the signing of the
6Indian Independence Act in 1947, which partitioned what was
7then British India into the two separate states of India and
8Pakistan and established a free and independent Indian nation
9following the long struggle of the Indian Independence
10Movement; and
11 WHEREAS, It is fitting and proper to celebrate with the
12Indian people and to reaffirm the democratic principles on
13which our two great nations were born; therefore, be it
